Used to refer to national qualifications registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). In the past, the NZ Qualifications Authority has administered many trade and advanced trade certificate qualifications. These are being progressively phased out and replaced by National Certificates and Diplomas registered on the National Qualifications Framework. National Diploma in Engineering
- Mechanical Services Level 6
The NDE is a welcomed engineering qualification created to fill the gap of the NZCE. The NDE consists of Core Mechanical Engineering Units that are taken by all students and three Strands to cater for different Mechanical Engineering industries. The Strands are:
* Mechanical Engineering
* Production Engineering
* Mechanical Services Engineering
Mechanical Services Engineering specializing in the design of Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration, these graduates are essential in the design of modern buildings to achieve a comfortable environment.

Requirements to study
Applicants must meet any prerequisites of their chose study programme. This can be discussed with the training provider at the time. But would include the following:

Be physically capable of completing the practical aspects of the programme

Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English.
Any applicant whose first language is not English must provide
evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 (with
no score below 5.0) or equivalent. All applicants are
interviewed to ensure the correct choices are made. First
preference will be given to students who have completed the
Certificate of Achievement in Introductory Technology Skills or
an Certificate of Achievement in Automotive and Engineering
Skills.

HVAC PATHWAY
Certificate in Fabrication Trades Level 2 (fulltime) entry level
This is an initial certificate programme for anyone wishing to become a fabricator (sheetmetal worker), welder (boilermaker) or work in the heating and ventilation industry
National Certificate in Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (Mechanical Services) (Level 4)
This qualification is for personnel employed in the manufacture, installation, and maintenance of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment. It is usually achieved through an apprenticeship typically lasting fo ur years. Download PDF
National Certificate in Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (Level 5)
This is an advanced trade type of qualification for trades people who have completed an appropriate apprenticeship and achieved the National Certificate in Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (Mechanical Services) (Level 4) or earlier equivalents eg Trade Certificate or eight years trade experience with employer verification. It includes advanced trade skills as well as supervision, business and administration skills appropriate to senior positions in this trade. This programme is designed to enable students to develop high level trade problem solving skills coupled with initial management and assessment competencies. (Study programme: normally 3 week block course plus 34 weeks of night classes (1 night per week) or distance learning material)

Manukau Institute of Technology would also like to re offer
the MIT Diploma L5 in HVAC and at present gauging interest from

The Program topics include, study exercises and assessments on
Design & Development of Refrigeration & Air
Conditioning systems, Commissioning, Maintenance and Servicing.
The spread of systems that form part of this work range from
Residential, Retail through to Commercial Industrial and
Central Plant.
The method of delivery of this learning and assessment
materials include a 3 week Block Course held mid year, a 15
week elearning online based classroom, and 6 months of student
direct project time. These projects for the basis of their
final assessments.

REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING PATHWAY
Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (Level 2) or Level 3 entry level
This programme (fulltime / part time) introduces students to the skills, knowledge and attributes that lead to employment or training as a refrigeration engineer. The full time schedule allows students to reach and be assessed for all Level 1 and Level 2 unit standards contained within the National Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Level 4.
National Certificate in Split System Air Conditioning (Level 3)
This qualification is for installers of split system (non-ducted) air conditioning equipment in domestic and commercial situations. These systems are popularly referred to as ‘heat pumps'. It may typically be achieved through a one week block course coupled with distance learning and practical installation experience.
National Certificate in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning (Level 4)
This qualification is for technicians in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning industry. People who have achieved this qualification are able to install, maintain, service, and commission refrigeration and air conditioning plant and equipment in all kinds of buildings and industrial sites, in refrigerated containers and trucks, and in many other applications. It is usually achieved through an apprenticeship typically lasting four years. Download PDF
MIT Diploma Level 5 in Applied Refrigeration & Air-conditioning Engineering
The Manukau Institute of Technology Diploma Level 5 in
Applied Refrigeration & Air-conditioning Engineering is a
part time course being offered at Manukau Institute of
Technology (M.I.T) in August. It is a progression from the
National Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
(Level 4) with candidates being able to cross credited into the
L5 National Certificate which leads on to the National Diploma
in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Level 6).
This advanced programme is designed to to enable participants
to develop high level trade problem solving skills coupled with
initial management and assessment competencies. It provides
maximum flexibility while maintaining the professional profile
required by the refrigeration and air conditioning industry.
People awarded this level 5 qualification have achieved skills
and knowledge in the fields of advanced refrigeration and air
conditioning technology, supervision and business and
administration.
Electrical Service Technician Training (EST A and EST B)
The work of RAC technicians requires electrical registration under the provisions of the Electricity Act 1992 and the Electricity Regulations 1997. The minimum registration requirement is Electrical Service Technician B (EST-B), and this must be obtained from the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) prior to application for the National Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (Level 4).
