The Wallie Askew Work Skills Apprentice award was established as a sign of respect and in appreciation for the many years of service that Wallie and his wife Betty gave to the industry. Wallie joined the institute in 1947 and was nominated employer representative on the New Zealand Apprenticeship Committee from 1977 till 1985. Wallie was the Institute President for 8 years and was awarded Life membership in 1982. His service to the refrigeration industry not only earned him the Queens Service Medal but also the respect and appreciation of the members of the industry.

Sadly both Wallie and his wife Betty died tragically in a road accident December 1989.

The overall aim of the competition is to encourage high standards throughout the industry and to further the training of the industry's apprentices. It also is an opportunity to introduce the apprentices to companies within the industry and to the activities and fellowship of the Institute.
